Home Cake Decorating Supply Company has a new chapter—and it’s already in motion.
Fresh remodel. Fresh energy. Same deep love of baking.
The shop has been reimagined to feel brighter, easier to explore, and more inspiring the moment you walk in. At the center of it all is the Proving Box—a new community space built for classes, demos, experimenting, and those “let’s just try it” baking moments that turn into something better than expected. It’s where ideas get tested, skills get stretched, and bakers of all levels get a place to play.
This is still your go-to spot for cake decorating, cookie decorating, chocolate work, and all the tools that make kitchen creativity possible. But it’s also becoming something more: a space that puts community front and center, celebrates curiosity, and makes decorating feel less intimidating and more like something you’re invited into.
Home Cake Decorating Supply Company has been part of North Seattle since 1960, when it was founded by two sisters, Thelma Sowards and Irene Amundsen. In 1962, it moved into its longtime home at 9514 Roosevelt Way NE. The shop remained in the family for decades, carried forward by Irene’s daughter, Greil, who led it until 2018. From there, it transitioned to new ownership under Dave Hasle—our beloved Cakeman Dave—who is now happily retired and driving a fancy new sports car!
And now, a new chapter—hi, I’m Rebecca.
I’m the new owner of Home Cake Decorating Supply, and I’m here because I genuinely love this world: the creativity, the problem-solving, the “can I actually pull this off?” energy that comes with every cake, cookie, and late-night baking idea.
Before taking over the shop, I spent years helping other people build small businesses, trying my hand at my own tiny commercial bakery, and working across retail, tech, and nonprofit spaces. Somewhere along the way, I realized my favorite work always comes back to the same thing: building things that help people create.
At the shop, you’ll find me dreaming up events and collabs, troubleshooting anything from creative color combos to wild cake ideas, and probably convincing you that you can pull off that super ambitious idea you came up with!
Outside the shop, I’m often in my kitchen running baking experiments that may or may not become real recipes. Long time favorites: savory babkas, decorated sugar cookies, and anything that lets me overthink a design just a little too much.
I’m genuinely excited to be part of the next chapter of this 65+ year legacy—and even more excited to build it with this community.
Cakeman Dave’s cakes are too cool, so we’ve got to keep them featured!
